Banbridge District Council Christmas Campaign
Branding/Banners/Signage/A5 brochure/Posters

Banbridge Council, along with the Chamber of Trade for the town wanted a Christmas campaign that would communicate the quality of the retail opportunities for customers.

I won the tender to produce a range of promotional materials, which included the overall brand that was then carried through all print design.

Look out for the billboards and posters around the town in the run up to the Christmas period.

Barbara Freeman - On The Square
Branding/Catalogue/Signage/Invitations/Press

Creating a clean, modern design, combined with the structural elements of a square was the theme I wanted to communicate in the design.

You can buy a copy of the catalogue from Amazon by clicking on this link.

"The exhibition, which is an installation of sculpture, drawings and sound, follows the success of the ‘The Surreal in Irish Art’ exhibition which ran throughout the summer of 2011 and proved very popular with both tourists and locals.

The sculpture that forms the centrepiece of the exhibition is created from four engraved perspex cubes within cubes. This form echoes the central space of the gallery and reflects light and colour from the skylight above and the window to the garden beyond."

This is the first in a series of images I have been planning for a while. The focus of this personal project will be to explore connections between type and imagery.

I've been planning a few personal projects for far too long, and as I finally discovered - there will never be enough time, so I have decided to make some!

I'll add the new images under this project heading, so check back as the series progresses.

Action for Biodiversity
Branding/Stationery/Large Format/Invites/Posters/Signage

"We aim to deliver a co-ordinated approach to conserving and promoting the biodiversity of our cross-border region.

Bio = life; diversity = variety.
Biodiversity: the variety of all living things from human beings to bacteria; the variety of all the places they live and the variety of individuals within a species.
Biodiversity: our life support system."
East Border Region aims and objectives.

East Border Region is a Local Authority led organisation which comprises ten Local Authorities: Newry and Mourne, Down and Banbridge District Councils, Armagh City and District Council, Craigavon, Ards and North Down Borough Councils in Northern Ireland and Louth, Monaghan and Meath County Councils in Ireland.

Working with the East Border Region was an exciting challenge for me, and one that I took very seriously. After being fortunate enough to win the tender for this massive project, I was eager, yet apprehensive to get going. However, the team working on the project were inspiring and enthusiastic about the theme, and in particular, Abby McSherry the Project Officer was great. I hope the results speak for themselves as we are really happy with the outcome, and I look forward to working on the project in the coming three years.

Surreal in Irish Art
Book design/Programme/Signage/Invites

"A new exhibition exploring the influence of surrealism on Irish art opens at the F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio, Banbridge on Saturday 28 May 2011.

‘The Surreal in Irish Art’ will present the work of over twenty artists and feature paintings and sculptures by well-known pupils of surrealism such as F.E. McWilliam, Colin Middleton and Nevill Johnson; work by artists who have engaged with the legacies of surrealism including Gerard Dillon, Noreen Rice, Jack Pakenham, Dorothy Cross, Dermot Seymour, Andrew Folan and Zoë Murdoch; and pieces by artists whose work has affinities with the surrealist movement, including Alice Maher, Catherine McWilliams, Fiona Finnegan and David Eager Maher."

femcwilliam.com

The Surreal in Irish Art is the first hard backed book Sugarisland has had the privilege of working on. We wanted to keep the layout simple, allowing the artists' work to be the focal point.

As always, the F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio in Banbridge gave me full creative freedom on the design. However, Riann Coulter, the Curator at the gallery worked closely with me to help realise the finished product.

I also have to thank Nicholson & Bass for the excellent job on the printing of this book.

This book is available to buy from the gallery directly or from amazon. Copies are also available from the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.

Southern Regional College Media Posters
Poster design

Here is a few of the poster designs I created for the media rooms in the Southern Regional College.

The aim of the posters was to communicate some of the careers available after undertaking our courses, and also to highlight some of the pathways students could consider taking.

There are more posters in this series, which I hope to upload soon.

Sharon Johnston - Designs for Living
Branding/Stationery/Website

Over the past year my wife and I have been fortunate enough to work with an excellent architect in securing planning permission for our new home.

Needless to say, when Sharon approached me to design her new branding and website, I jumped at the chance to be able to reverse the roles.

Sharon wanted her new look to be warm and inviting, and to communicate a personal approach to the service she provides.

The website launched at the beginning of 2011, and I would strongly recommend anyone thinking of building a new home to give her a call.

Banbridge District Council

The top brochure was another project commissioned by Banbridge District Council for an 18 page Customer Charter.

The resulting design uses a subtle colour palette, combined with a typographic-led design, on a matt finish.

Below the customer charter is another brochure recently completed for the council. This time, it was a glitzy awards nominations form they were after. Both pieces use the council's blue colour palette as the driving design element.

John Bosco McAtasney

John McAtasney approached me to design the new branding, labels and print materials for his hand woven clothing line.

I was lucky enough to be given a brief insight into John's working methods, and having observed him for a number of hours in his workshop, it really is an amazing craft to watch.

John is happy to share his knowledge, and loves his job at the Ulster Folk and Transport museum, where he gets the opportunity to weave on a daily basis.
